About us

Deep in the rolling Shire of the Isle of Wight, Hobbit House is a place where comfort leads to adventure. We are situated one mile from the coast on the south of the Isle of Wight.

We provide one to one instruction on countryside skills and woodland crafts. We have a twin room available for guests. Campers (tents only) are also welcome by appointment.

The log fire, time to watch the view and home cooking are what Hobbits like best. Packed lunches and supper are available. Green tourism is all around the valley with open space for walking, cycling and carriage driving. The Tennyson Heritage Coast is only a mile away, the village pub 300 yards.

What we do is help you learn countryside skills and woodland crafts like hedgelaying, hurdle making, charcoal burning and a great line in bonfires.

Walks, cycle routes and bridleways surround us and some routes start from the back gate.

There are two adventurous projects underway: building Bagend (a low impact building in our wood) and creating a wildlife pond. Sustainable, eco-friendly regeneration and permaculture are promoted throughout the twelve acres of Hobbit House land. We provide as many habitats as we can for all species, particularly those at the bottom of the food chain.

You can bring your own equines too, see Horse & Carriage page. Sheep friendly dogs by arrangement.

Oswald Hoskyns has a wood in which you can stay with the badgers, the birds and the bees. He can teach you dry hedging, making things with coppice products and woodmanship. He also conducts tutored wine tastings and can teach you to play the ukulele in five minutes.

Open all year round, we have hose down and lock up facilities for bikes and boots. Laundry facilities on request.

As part of our Environmental Policy, we will make it easier for you to travel using Public Transport. We will pick you up from anywhere on the island!
